{Back to School Spaces} Mudrooms & Laundry Rooms

Its that time of year again! Whether you’re busy getting your own tribe back to school, preparing to take on another round of classes yourself, or just adjusting to a less lax work schedule, a huge part of our day-to-day function revolves around one crucial space in our homes: the mudroom. Depending on your home’s layout, the mudroom can be combined with the laundry room, or can be it’s own stand alone space. We often hear from clients after the project is completed, that they’re surprised when their mudroom turns into one of their favorite spaces in their home. Here are some tips and trends to creating a functional (and pretty) mudroom.

*Durable Flooring Can Be Pretty Too

There are plenty of flooring options available, that are both durable and aesthetically appealing. We love these options:

*Take Inventory

By taking inventory of what items you will use in the space, the design can be tailored to your households needs. Consider what items need to be accessible for every day, and what items can be stored out of immediate reach. It’s also important to consider who will be using what items. Hooks, open storage, and low storage are great for kids to “grab on the go”. Other items such as cleaning supplies, can be stored at higher levels, out of reach and out of sight. Planning ahead is what will make for the most successful design.

There are so many fun options when selecting hooks, here are some ideas:

*Seating

As designers, we love the concept of designing for all users and abilities. Providing a small seating area can make the space more functional for all users. Who doesn’t love a comfy space where they can take a moment to tie their shoes, without having to kneel on the ground? Plus, it’s a great design opportunity to add a fun color or pattern to the space with a cute cushion. Added storage can also be found underneath bench seats. It’s simply a “win-win solution” in every design aspect!

*Color

The mudroom is a space that you can easily add pops of color, and take bigger risks on, since it’s not typically the focal point of a home. We love the idea of adding color through wallpaper, paint colors, and fun upholstered window coverings.
