Summer is a precious time for Minnesotans. After being cooped up inside for almost 6 months, we make sure not to take our beautiful, warmer months for granted. This year, I wanted to find a new, fun activity or toy that the kids could enjoy outside and immediately thought of a sandbox. It’s such a timeless activity and one of my favorite things with play with growing up.
There are of course plenty of options to choose from when it comes to sandboxes, but I wanted to stray away from the typical plastic ones for two reasons. First, we wanted one that would hold up summer after summer. And second, the plastic options can tend to be a bit of an eye sore in the yard.
After doing some searching, we decided on this wooden sandbox with with bench seats! We not only loved the look it, but also loved the fact that it can close shut to protect it from bugs, weather, and our dog, Hunter 😉
Now that Brooke and Lou are a bit older, we love to get them involved in a lot of projects around the home (cooking, cleaning up, etc.). And while they aren’t quite ready to hold a power drill, Charlie and I decided that painting the sandbox would be a great way to not only customize it, but something the kids could participate in!
We painted the base of the sandbox in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White and the seat handles and brackets in Benjamin Moore’s Gentle Gray (which has a great blue tint to it).
Charlie has a way of making everything exciting for the kids, it’s one of the many things I love about him. They had a blast painting and it was so fun to see how excited the kids got when they finally saw it all put together. After it was done drying, it honestly didn’t take too long to put together (maybe 30 minutes with two people helping!). We used about 8, 50lb bags of sand to fill the box which we picked up from our local hardware store. After that, the kids were ready to play!
We’ve had it out in our yard for a little over a week now and I can’t begin to tell you how many hours of fun this thing has given to them! I can’t believe it took us this long to get one.
I’m excited to spend the weekend with Charlie and the kids, celebrating the amazing father that he is! Wishing all of the special guys in your lives a Happy Father’s Day too!
