We know that selecting a beautiful nightstand and lamp combination can be a bit difficult. What colors complement each other well? What are the rules when it comes to scale and size? Can I mix metal finishes? All fair questions! But, we’re here to tell you that this mission doesn’t have to be all that challenging! Today, we’re offering up our 3 simple steps to creating the perfect pairing and a list of our favorite combinations for you to shop.

Scale: We’re starting off with one of the more frustrating dilemmas when it comes to nightstand + lamp combinations. There’s nothing more frustrating than selecting a beautiful lamp just to get it home and realize it looks way too small or too big on your nightstand. To avoid this, we live by these few guidelines:

1. The bottom of the shade should be at eye level when you’re sitting on the bed.
2. The shade width should be no greater than half of the table width.
3. Try and select a lamp and a nightstand that have similar heights. (i.e. a nightstand that is 30″ h and a lamp that is 27” h).
4. In our opinion, it’s easier to start with the nightstand and then select the lamp second. Keep those measurements on hand!

Color: Whether you go neutral or want to opt for color, we like to suggest creating a balance. So, if you’re looking at a dark, contrasted nightstand perhaps select a white or light grey lamp. Alternatively, if you want a green or blue nightstand, a neutral lamp (i.e. white, black, grey, or even a metal) can keep it from looking too chaotic.

Finishes: Similar to the hardware and plumbing in your kitchen, don’t be afraid to play around with the finish and texture of your nightstand and lamp pairing! A nightstand with bronze knobs and lamp with brass details can look absolutely beautiful together. Don’t get too hung up on it!
