One of our most-frequently asked questions – today, we’re sharing our tips & tricks for mixing metals with ease.
When it comes to choosing the right lighting, plumbing or hardware for a space, we know things can be a bit overwhelming which is why we’re here to help. Forget about being matchy-matchy and don’t be afraid to play with contrast as we dive into our tips for mixing metals & finishes within a space.
Mixing Metals & Finishes in Bathrooms
Does your bathroom have silver hardware but your heart has a love for gold accents? If so, worry not! Take a peek at our tips & tricks for styling mixed metals & finishes within a bathroom to get the best of both worlds.
Tip #1: Consider Tones of Metals
With so many different varieties and options, it’s important to consider the tones of the metals in your space. When making selections, be sure you stick with either all warm undertones or all cool undertones to ensure the room has balance. We tend to mix polished nickel + brass because of the warm undertones both provide.
Tip #2: Keep it Balanced
In order to keep things balanced, we try not to use more than 2 different metal finishes per room. For bathrooms in particular, we suggest sconces and hardware in one finish and plumbing and mirrors in another.
Mixing Metals & Finishes in Kitchens
Whether you have a kitchen with polished nickel plumbing or beautiful brass pendants you don’t want to part with, here’s our tips for mixing and matching metals and finishes within a kitchen to create a cohesive, balanced look.
Tip #1: Plumbing vs Hardware vs Lighting
Similar to the tips shared above with bathrooms, keep the undertones either warm or cool, and stick to two metal finishes within a single space. We tend to do brass hardware/lighting and polished nickel plumbing or polished nickel hardware and plumbing, and brass lighting (as seen in our Dryden Rd Project) for a look that feels balanced and pleasing to the eye.
Tip #2: Coordinate, Don’t Match
If a dining room and kitchen are open/adjacent, keep things cohesive yet different. Coordinate lighting and finishes that are within the same design trend (i.e choose pieces that are both modern) but stay away from being too matchy matchy – you want each piece to make a subtle statement of its own without overpowering the other.
Our Dryden Road Project (featured above) has an open floor plan where the dining room and kitchen are just steps away from each other. Take a peek at how we selected modern lighting fixtures for both spaces that feel different yet still work together in close proximity.
Mixing Finishes in Open Floor Plans
When it comes to mixing finishes in open floor plans, there are no boundaries! As long as it’s balanced within the defined room (i.e. sticking to the tips above for each given space) you really can’t go wrong. But as a rule of thumb, still stick to no more than two finishes in each space.
Our Ashland Ave. Project features an open floor plan – as you can see from the image above, we chose a matte black light fixture over the kitchen island and brass fixtures for the sconces, breakfast nook, and dining room.
