Our Guide to Choosing the Right Rug

When it comes to designing a beautiful, comfortable, and layered room we typically like to start with the rug. Over the years, we’ve come to find that an incredible rug can truly define a space. Not only does it bring warmth and texture, but it also gives us the opportunity to add some character and, often times, color and pattern!

The problem when it comes to rugs is that there are so many varieties to choose from. It can often be challenging to decide what size, price point, design, or material is best for your home. For a little help, we’re sharing our guide to selecting the best rugs for your home. From living rooms to mudrooms, below is our process and a few of our all-time favorites!

KITCHEN, ENTRYWAY, OR MUDROOM

When it comes to high traffic areas like the kitchen, entryway, or mudroom you’re going to want to select a rug that can hold up nicely. We like to select rugs that are easy to clean and that are smooth and won’t snag/pull. For extra precaution, we often select a rug with a pattern so that it camouflages the inevitable messes and stains.

What size: Standard sizes are 2’x3′, 4’x6′ and 5’x7′

What material: Flat-weave or low-pile rugs

LIVING ROOM AND BEDROOM

For living room and bedrooms, don’t be afraid to select a rug with a bit more height. After all, you want these rooms to be as cozy and warm as possible and the extra pile will do just that. Although these rugs might take a little bit more work to keep clean, we’ve found that with the right products (hello, Woolite!) we’ve had no problem getting typical stains and debris out easily. In our opinion, if you’re going to put a rug in any space in your home make it the living room or bedroom. It’s worth the investment, especially if you live in a colder weather state like we do, because the rugs actually keep your home warm in the winter.

What size: Standard sizes are 8’x10′, 9’x12′ and 11’x14′

What material: Medium to high-pile rugs
