A Chat with Artist Abbey Holden!

When we developed Brooke & Lou a few ago, there were a few things we knew the brand needed to have. One of the most important ones being artwork, wallpaper and fabrics patterns that were completely exclusive to B&L. We couldn’t have thought of anyone better to bring our style to life than artist (and Twin Cities native!) Abbey Holden.

Abbey has played such a crucial role in the development of our business and we feel so lucky to call her a friend. Today, we wanted you all to have the opportunity to get to know her better and so we sat down with Abbey to chat about all things art, business, and even a few fun, rapid fire questions!

Tell us a little bit about your history! When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I grew up painting with my Grandmother and drawing with my parents. I’ve said I wanted to be an artist from a young age! I remember writing it down on a third grade homework assignment (which I’ve kept!) I focused on art through school and eventually worked for Lilly Pulitzer as a Print Designer. After realizing I missed the Midwest, I followed the little voice inside me to start my own business as an Artist. I am so thankful to work in a field that is so fulfilling!

What is your favorite part of your job?
I love the joy and emotions art can create in others. Being able to give someone a painting that reminds them of a place or person is very special for me. I will never get over the reactions my paintings get and the stories of places I paint for people.

When you find yourself in a creative rut, what’s your way to get out of it?
If I’m ever in a creative rut (which happens quite a bit!) I’ll draw or paint something that is just for fun. It can be whatever I want it to be. Something that is just play and allows me to create without any real expectations. Sometimes these exercises open new doors and give me new ideas as well!

What’s your current favorite Brooke & Lou piece you’ve designed and why?
I still love the Leaf Sketches Wall Art and Lyla Stripe Wallpaper. The Leaf Sketches feel like a fresh and modern take on a botanical sketch. I have a soft spot for all botanical drawings. The Lyla Stripe Pattern reminds me of the block print patterns I’ve always loved and studied.

When are you most inspired or productive? In the morning or in the evening?
I get most things done in the morning. I like the quiet and focus I have at those hours.

Who is a woman that you look up to professionally?
Tiffany Kokal! Not only is she an incredibly talented local photographer, but a genuine person who somehow balances a demanding career, family, home and friendships well. She has a drive unlike most!

What is a local spot in the Twin Cities that everyone needs to check out?
“Sky Pesher” by James Turrell in the Walker Sculpture Garden. I try to visit it often and recommend it to everyone!

Rapid Fire Q’s

A beautiful Donni bag I received as a Christmas gift.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, Remi the Bernedoodle. She is my daily entertainment since I work from home!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to go to Japan. Some of my favorite art supplies and notebooks are Japanese.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing?

switched to Art…a decision I’m so happy I made!
