Our Official Rug Guide

Rugs are an essential part of any good design — they add the necessary warmth, texture, and color to a space! But, with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right rug for your room. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to choose the right rug size for each of the major living areas in your home.

Many of you are probably thinking, ‘But Bria, rugs come in standard sizes and every home has different layouts/sizes, how can one size fit all?’. And, you’re right! As a rule of thumb, bigger rooms need bigger rugs to ground them and smaller rooms sometimes need smaller rugs to make them look bigger. Standard rug sizes are a great starting point for choosing the right size rug for your space. But, it really comes down to your furniture size and layout the should determine the size of your rug.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to choose the right rug size for your home.

No matter what size bed you own, it is good to amount for 18 – 36″ on the left, right, and front of your bed. We typically do not recommend having he top legs of your bed on the rug and keeping around 6-10″ of space between your rug and nightstands.

Similar to the bedroom, we try and ensure that all front legs of your living room furniture are placed on the rug. If your room is very large, you may get away with putting all 4 legs on the rug depending on how large of a rug you need to go for (this might require custom sizing!). Aim for 6-10″ of rug on either side of your sofa as well.

Unlike the living room and bedroom, try and aim for all of your furniture to be on your rug. Even when pulling out a chair, ensure your rug is large enough so that it stays on the rug when pulled out.
