The 1 Father’s Day Gift He Wont Expect

The Gift He Won’t Expect

Last week we shared our gift guide for Father’s Day. Now we are digging deeper with one of our favorite gift ideas, the Joule.

Joule, Sous Vide Way of Cooking

We learned about the Joule from a client and friend of ours who is somewhat of a food connoisseur. He raved about the ease of using this new method of cooking, called Sous Vide {pronounced Sue Veed} and how it makes dinners somewhat fool proof! {Just what we need!} The method involves a pan, water, the joule and whatever item you’d like to cook. We wanted to give it a shot with our guys to see just how easy it is! Per their request, we started with a beautiful steak from Grass Fed Cattle Co, a Minnesota local company that brings farm fresh produce to urban living. They have made it so easy for a busy family like ours, we can now order our meat online, drive to their location in Edina and they will bring it to the car for you! {It’s all about the convenience people}.

What we love about this new way of cooking is it allows the kids to help. Throw an apron on {we all know they make a mess no matter what they do!} and let them pitch in. How cute are these aprons from Hedley & Bennett? We love how masculine they are, and so practical for those inevitable stains too!

Once you have everything ready to go, here is a step by step guide to cooking with a Joule.

STEP 1

Pour him a glass of his preferred scotch and pair it with a glass of your favorite wine. Collect the tools and simple ingredients you will need:

Tools:

  • Joule
  • Gallon Size Ziploc Bag
  • Large pot

Ingredients:

  • Steak of your choice
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Olive Oil
  • Bay leaf and any other herbs you enjoy seasoning your steak with {thyme and rosemary are a perfect addition!}
  • Butter

You are now prepared for this “seemingly magical cooking technique.”

STEP 2

Download the Joule App by ChefSteps Inc. This app is the KEY to your success. {and how you operate your Joule device!} Make sure to decide the level of doneness you prefer for your steak. The app will guide you on how long to cook the steak and set the temperature for you to create that perfectly cooked steak!

STEP 3

Season your steak. Salt and pepper evenly sprinkled on both sides of the steak, along with any other seasonings you desire. Place your steak in the ziploc bag, along with around 2 tablespoons of olive oil and any other fresh herbs you care to add, do not seal the bag.

STEP 4

Follow the directions on the Joule App. This app is incredibly intuitive and gives you step by step directions turning the worst cook into a master chef of the future. You will start the Joule and preheat the water in the pot. From there you submerge the ziploc bag with the steak in it. Be sure to attach the baggy to the side of the pot with a paper clamp to prevent the bag from completely falling into the water {and allowing the water to get into the bag}.

The Joule app will take care of the rest!

STEP 5

The best part of cooking your protein this way is it allows you to prepare your sides for the meal without worrying about the meat. Cooked vegetables are always a great addition. Carrots, asparagus, potatoes, you can’t go wrong with any of these paired with a delicious steak.

STEP 6

When the meat is done cooking, you will want to sear the outside of the steak. You can do this by either throwing it on a hot grill for a few minutes, or heating up a hot pan on your stovetop with butter and searing the steak for a minute or two on each side.

STEP 7

Enjoy. We can truly not say enough wonderful things about the Joule. As a mother of young children, a way we can cook a fresh healthy meal that doesn’t require a ton of work on my part is a life saver for me! For this recipe and many more, check out Joule’s recipes on their website {also on their app as well}.

Does this look like a cooking method your family would like to try? We have an exciting giveaway coming up on Friday where you can enter to win your own Joule for Father’s Day! Stay tuned for your chance to win!
